Rotary meeting features BBB rep

Russell Subiono, public outreach coordinator and charity review administrator for the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii, will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise meeting Wednesday. Subiono will present information to outsmart fraud, specifically investment fraud. He will review the risk factors for becoming a victim, expose the persuasion tactics used by scammers and provide tips to empower individuals and to keep them safe as consumers.

Meetings are held at Hale Halawai, beginning at 6:45 a.m. For more information, contact Bev Fraser at 936-9965. All meetings are open to the public.

meet Wednesday

Kona Kupuna Singles Club meets for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Romano’s Macaroni Grill in Waikoloa. Call 329-6101 for reservations.

Children invited
to story time

Kona Stories bookstore and the American Association of University Wonen are hosting a story time for children 2 to 6 years old at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Keauhou Shopping Center courtyard.

This month’s story time theme is “Welcome to the Holidays” and features books like “The Night before Christmas” and holiday crafts and snacks.

There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snack. Space is limited to 30 children. Reservations are recommended and participants should check in 10 minutes early at Kona Stories Book Store. For more information, call 324-0350.

Konawaena ‘Turkey
Trot’ is Nov. 26

Konawaena Elementary School will hold its annual Turkey Trot on Nov. 26. Every year students “trot” around the field to raise funds to help pay for student field trips and technology. For more information, or to donate, contact the school at 323-4555.

Anderson to address writer’s group

Karen Anderson will lead an informal question-and-answer time from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at a meeting of local writer’s critique group, Write Stuff. The meeting will be held at 75-5804 Melelina St. in Kailua View Estates.

Anderson is the writer and photographer for West Hawaii Today’s monthly “At Home” supplement featuring unique homes and businesses. She is also the author of a book that can be purchased at the meeting or at Kona Stories Book Store in Keauhou Shopping Center.

Cancer support group meets Thursday

Cancer support group You’ll Never Walk Alone meets from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the group’s free meetings held the first and third Thursday of the month; light refreshments are served.

Keck Observatory talk covers exoplanets

Andrew Howard, astronomer for the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy, will give a talk about the hunt for exoplanets and the quest for another Earth during a Keck Observatory talk from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. Howard will also describe the diverse landscape of exoplanets, including recent discoveries of planets the size of Earth.
